All placements are for a minimum of one year.

*An important requirement of the public school programme is that you need a drivers licence to be eligible. It is common for you to drive to school in Japan and you will be set up with a car once there with help from your school.

Have a look below at the package and how to apply.

How It Works

If this sounds like something you're interested in, there's a few things we need to know before we can start the application process:

  • Do you have a bachelor's degree or higher (in any discipline)?

  • Are you a native English speaker? (see Apply page for requirements)

  • Do you have drivers licence?

  • Are you in good health?

  • Are you enthusiastic, outgoing and ready to make a change?

If the answer to all of the above is yes, then you can start your adventure in Japan with us!

The application process starts after a short telephone interview with a member of The Fewer Things team. This is to get to know you and to find out why you want to teach in Japan! If you are successful in passing the interview we will start the process with our team in Japan and get you ready to start your new adventure.

From here on in you will be preparing for your move!

Japanese Culture
Course

  • Prior to traveling you will get to complete a 40 hour (one week) online Japanese Culture and History course. This provides a strong foundation of understanding to get ready for you move to Japan!

  • An insight to Japanese history to give a great insight into the country you will be living in!

  • Learn about Japanese cultural nuances to help you settle in easier on arrival - this will allow you to make good first impressions and make stronger connections with local people

  • Basic language skills and helping you get started with a study plan!

This programme has limited spaces and it is encouraged to plan as far ahead as possible.

Placement Location

All applicants accepted onto the programme are guaranteed a teaching position in a public school in Japan - you need to be quite open minded about where in Japan you will be placed. We will of course take preferences into account but there is no guarantee we can get your location preference exactly.

Public school positions stretch the full length of Japan! You could be placed in a futuristic city or a traditional town fully immersed by Japanese culture. Wherever you go the local people are ultra friendly, the food will be amazing and you'll have a truly once in a lifetime experience.

Accommodation & Driving

Accommodation will be organised for you in Japan and you will be responsible for your rent and utilities. Typical rent in Japan is between £400 to £600 per month plus some utilities (electricity/wifi) which you can expect to pay about £50 for. You will be asked to pay a deposit and 1 month rent upfront on arrival, so please take this into account when budgeting.

If you are required to drive to your placement each day, your school will help you with getting set up with a rental car for your placement - often the school will pay a generous contribution to your rental per month and the car will be fully insured. You can use the car in your spare time too, which is perfect for getting out and about to see Japan!

Other Financials

The programme fee is £1450 which includes all of the above listed. Other expenses also need to be taken into account when signing up.

You will need in the region of £3500 for everything else; this includes background checks, document preparation, visa, flight, travel insurance, initial rent and spending money before your first pay day. The process getting to Japan is quite long, so you will have around 8 to 10 months to save up for this adventure before departing!

Savings potential in Japan is not the highest. Compared to somewhere like South Korea where you can save £700+ per month comfortably, you may only be able to save a couple of hundred pounds in Japan per month.

Applying with Friends

Often applicants like to sign up with their partner or friend(s) and this is totally fine for Thailand, China and Vietnam. However, for this Japan programme it is not possible to do so and you must be open minded that you and a friend could be working and living in different cities.

If you really want to be placed with your friend or partner, we'd suggest looking at a different programme.
